GRADES
Correcting Assignments/ Improving Knowledge and Grades
ALL students may correct most homework assignments for a better grade. Students who "must" correct their assignment have scored below an 80% and will have a stamp on it that says "please correct".The highest grade of the two will be their final grade. They must turn in the corrected assignment within two days of the original assignment being passed back with "corrected" and the date at the top. If a student DID correct the assignment, Parent Portal will say "redone" in the special mark section of that particular assignment with the highest grade achieved.
Retaking Quizzes and Tests
ALL students may retake most quizzes and tests if they complete the necessary actions before retaking it. They might be asked to complete a study guide, correct a quiz, have a parent signature, stay in for lunch, and/or stay after school in order to retake it. If a student DID correct the assignment, Parent Portal will say "redone" in the special mark section of that particular assignment with the highest grade achieved.
Science Spirals
Every student must have a spiral notebook only for science class. It is brought to class every day. In this, we frequently complete "bell work", a daily question to start off our day. It must be dated, titled "BW" and on the correct page for credit if it is bell work. Labs and notes can also be found in the spiral. Each assignment is an "all or nothing" daily grade collected either once or twice per unit for 1 large grade. A scoring guide is given and stapled in the front. Students who are absent are always given the work that they are to complete on their own time. Mrs. Venn has a "class spiral" (that does not leave the room) if students want to check to make sure they have everything correct. This is to be done at lunch or after school in VELO. This is their classwork grade worth 10% of their final grade.
Homework Assignments
The purpose of homework assignments is to have the students "put the information" back into their brain when they get home. It should not usually last for more than 10 minutes per night, twice a week or so. This helps the student retain the information they have been studying. Student should always look over their handed back assignments so that they can learn from their mistakes and prevent the mistake from happening again. Homework is worth 10% of their final grade.
Quizzes
Quizzes are over parts of the unit, and are usually cumulative throughout the specific unit. Studying flashcards daily for vocabulary retention can enormously help students on quizzes. Study guides will be given. Student should always look over their handed back quizzes so that they can learn from their mistakes and prevent the mistake from happening again. Quizzes are worth 20% of their final grade and can be retaken. (See Retaking Quizzes and Tests)
Tests
Tests are a combination of information from notes, bell work, labs, vocabulary, and quizzes. Studying flashcards daily for vocabulary retention can help students enormously on tests. Study guides will be given. Tests are 60% of their final grade and can be retaken. (See Retaking Quizzes and Tests)
Benchmark Tests
Benchmark tests are twice a year at the end of 1 semester and 2nd semester. There are cumulative exams covering everything learned in 6th grade. The scores are included in the student's semester test grade. To prepare for these, students should always review any assignment, quiz or test given back and figure out what they got wrong and why it was wrong to learn from their mistakes. A general study guide with topics will be given.
