Parents:
Be sure to check Parent Portal, the online grade book to keep informed with your
child's grades. I use Parent Portal as a significant communication tool between
students, parents and myself. I frequently write general notes about retake
opportunities and sometimes specific comments about your child's specific
assignment.
For a list of comment descriptions used by Mrs. Venn for Parent Portal, click here.
Also, a fantastic tool to keep up with your child's academic progress is School Notes. It is an online web site that your child's teachers post daily homework assignments. You can also view the calendar for past assignments. Upcoming events are also posted to keep you informed. It is super easy to have an email sent with the updated assignments daily! If you do not have access to the Internet, you can also call a phone line to hear the same daily information at 636-923-3500 ext 3853.
Mrs. Venn strongly believes in flashcards and graphic organizers as aids in memorizing science vocabulary. Science is like a foreign language, with a gross number of new words for students to remember. Without knowledge of these words, students are at a lost even when they might know the scientific concept but can't recognize it because they don't know the vocabulary. I will provide flashcards with the vocabulary words on one side, students neatly write the definitions on the back. Keep all flashcards separated by units in zip lock bags and save. They will come in handy for benchmark tests.
Please take a minute to read my "Classroom Expectations and Grades" link at the left. It explains details about my grading system and assignment redo's / retakes.
Here is the key to the expectations quiz all students took at the beginning of the year.
Our textbook is online, and students may access it from home along with access to worksheets that they might have left at school. Some worksheets can also be accessed under "Student Resources". (Textbooks will not be used until November or December. More information to come.)
